Great vision without glasses, in just minutes

World-renowned LASIK Surgeon Dr. Robert Maloney, founder of Los Angeles’ Maloney-Shamie-Hura Vision Institute, has been performing LASIK surgery in Los Angeles since it was introduced as an FDA clinical trial more than 25 years ago. His partner, Dr. Neda Shamie, has been performing LASIK for over 15 years. Before joining MSHVI, Dr. Hura completed his fellowship at the Cleveland Eye Clinic, where he performed the full spectrum of vision correction, including laser vision correction through LASIK.

Since early in their careers, they have remained at the forefront of development and research, always ensuring that their patients benefit from the latest and safest technological advances.

The result is that our surgeons have personally performed more than 80,000 vision correction procedures—and have been the LASIK surgeons of choice for top athletes, celebrities, military pilots, and fellow surgeons.

Quick, Easy, Painless, and the Best Decision I Have Ever Made.

What is LASIK Surgery?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) is micro-surgery, performed by a surgeon with a laser, which reshapes the cornea, and thus changes the patient’s vision. Correctly performed, LASIK eye surgery can correct the most common forms of vision impairment—myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.

During LASIK eye surgery in Los Angeles, a thin layer of tissue is folded back from the surface of the cornea. After the laser reshapes the cornea, the tissue is folded back into place, where it bonds quickly. At the Maloney-Shamie-Hura Vision Institute in Los Angeles, the entire procedure is performed using state-of-the-art surgical lasers, so there are no scalpels, stitches or needles. The time in surgery is 3 to 5 minutes per eye. Healing for most patients is so fast that vision improves within hours of the procedure, and many patients return to work the next day.

The amazing thing about LASIK is how fast it heals. My patients go back to normal life the day after their surgery, going to work, wearing make-up, whatever they need to do, and there’s just incredible excitement and joy. It’s what makes doing this so incredible for me, because people come in fearful and leave ecstatic.

Is LASIK Eye Surgery right for you?

Because your eyes and your vision are as unique to you as your fingerprints and DNA, it's challenging for us to know whether LASIK eye surgery can benefit you without a personal examination. However, many recent medical advances, some pioneered at the Maloney-Shamie-Hura Vision Institute in Los Angeles, have made it possible to correct problems that couldn't be fixed just a few years ago. Dr. Maloney, Dr. Shamie, and Dr. Hura deliver among the best LASIK eye surgery Los Angeles has to offer.

In general, the conditions we're able to treat include nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. We like our patients to be at least 18 years of age, have healthy corneas, and to have had stable vision over the past year.

What to expect during a LASIK consultation

Doctor with a patient

Determining if you are a candidate for LASIK eye surgery is a multi-step process. We realize that deciding to have LASIK comes only after careful consideration. During your consultation, Dr. Maloney, Dr. Shamie, or Dr. Hura will evaluate your eyes and educate you about vision correction. This will enable you to make the best, most informed decision regarding your LASIK procedure.

The first step is to evaluate the health of your eyes by measuring your vision and the thickness of your corneas. Your surgeon’s team also will go over your general medical history. The use of corneal mapping or iDesign Wavescan System sets this eye evaluation apart.

During the iDesign Wavescan System procedure, a digital WaveScan using wavefront-guided measurements evaluates 1200 different points of the eye. The result is a precise “map” of your vision that is 25 times better than traditional glasses and contact lens measurements. These painless and quick scans are vital and will enable Dr. Maloney, Dr. Shamie, or Dr. Hura to plan your LASIK procedure and correct each visual imperfection in your eyes.

The Maloney-Shamie-Hura Vision Institute’s medical staff will guide you through each step of your comprehensive evaluation while answering all of your questions. Your exam includes a tour of the office, the vision correction surgical suite, and recovery areas, so you understand what you will experience on the day of your LASIK eye surgery. Once the evaluations are complete, you will meet with our surgeons or the medical staff as they review each of your tests and determine if you are a candidate for LASIK.

The Maloney-Shamie-Hura Vision Institute staff is committed to taking as much time as needed to answer all your questions about the LASIK procedure – from how long it typically takes to when you should expect to be seeing clearly. Dr. Maloney, Dr. Shamie, and Dr. Hura have one shared goal: giving you the best vision possible.

This precise level of measurement and treatment can enable you to achieve the full potential of your personal best vision.

Step One: Customized Measurements

The IntraLase FS laser is a computer-guided, ultra-fast laser used to create the thin corneal flap for the LASIK procedure. With the IntraLase femtosecond laser, expert Laser Eye Surgeon Dr. Maloney, Dr. Shamie, or Dr. Hura can create a corneal flap that is designed precisely to the configuration of your eye, without cutting, ensuring rapid healing after the surgery is complete.

Step Two: Laser-Created Flaps

We perform your laser eye surgery using the VISX Star S4 excimer laser. Their expertise with this advanced laser system allows them to perform your eye surgery in about 3 to 6 minutes. The Advanced CustomVue procedure provides the most precise, accurate form of laser vision correction available today. 3D eye tracking ensures that your treatment remains exact and specific to your customized LASIK treatment program, even if your eye moves.

Step Three: Wavefront-Guided Vision Correction

NASA recently approved the LASIK procedure for its astronauts following review of extensive military clinical data, which showed the use of two lasers (femtosecond & wavefront-guided) provides superior safety and vision as compared to earlier forms of the procedure. In fact, all branches of the U.S. military have approved LASIK for their servicemen and women, including Naval aviators and Air Force pilots, thanks to a decade of military research and recent advancements in LASIK technology.
