State-of-the-art, bladeless surgery to restore your vision

Cataract surgery has several steps: making an incision in the cornea, breaking up the old, cloudy natural lens, removing the lens, and correctly placing the replacement lens.
Although modern cataract surgery is considered to be one of the safest and most successful procedures performed in medicine today, Laser Cataract Surgery leads to more precise and reliable correction for low levels of astigmatism and can help better center the lens implant being used to provide even better outcomes and make Advanced Cataract Surgery at the Maloney-Shamie Vision Institute in Los Angeles even safer.

Advantages of Laser Cataract Surgery

Los Angeles Cataract Surgeons, Dr. Shamie and Dr. Hura use the state-of-the-art Femtosecond laser for laser cataract surgery. It has been used for a decade in LASIK surgery and is now available for cataract surgery. According to Dr. Shamie, "Laser cataract surgery is like robotic surgery on other parts of the body. We can do precise, minimally invasive cataract surgery with the laser. A large cataract can be broken into tiny pieces with the laser and removed through an ultra-small incision."

“I am excited to offer Laser Cataract Surgery to all our cataract and lens exchange patients. I truly believe this revolutionary technology is the way of the future.”

-Dr. Shamie

Advantages of Laser Cataract Surgery Vs. Traditional (Manual) Method

Dr. Shamie and Dr. Hura at the Los Angeles-based Maloney-Shamie Vision Institute are proud to offer some of the finest laser cataract surgery Los Angeles has to offer. Many cataract patients can expect the following benefits from their surgery:

More Accurate Correction of Your Vision

Precise laser incisions allow better correction of astigmatism. Also, your lens implant is better centered, snugly fit, and less likely to shift during your healing. A perfectly centered lens means more accurate vision correction and better quality of vision.

More Gentle Surgery

Less energy is used overall in laser cataract surgery because the laser helps break the cataract up. Lower energy used inside the eye better protects the fragile internal structures of the eye. The risk of damage to the delicate structure that surrounds the cataract, the capsular bag, is lower with laser cataract surgery. An undamaged capsular bag is important to support the new lens implant.

How Laser Cataract Surgery Works

Cataract surgery has several steps: making an incision in the cornea, breaking up the old, cloudy natural lens, removing the lens, and correctly placing the replacement lens. Laser Cataract Surgery uses the Femtosecond laser to do many of the steps currently performed by hand but is now bladeless, all computer-controlled and programmed by Dr. Neda Shamie or Dr. Hura.

Although modern cataract surgery is considered to be one of the safest and most successful procedures performed in medicine today, Laser Cataract Surgery improves the precision of many of the key surgical steps to provide even better outcomes and make Advanced Cataract Surgery at the Maloney-Shamie Vision Institute in Los Angeles even safer.

During the laser procedure, small incisions are made in the cornea of the eye with the laser. The laser is also used to break up the natural lens of the eye so it may be removed. The lens is then removed through the incisions and the procedure continues as the new intraocular lens is placed in the eye.

A Lens Implant Will Complete Your Vision Restoration

After your cataract surgery, there are many options for replacement lenses, and our Vision Correction Specialists will help you choose the one that best suits your needs.

Light Adjustable Lens

The Light Adjustable Lens is the only lens implant whose power can be adjusted after surgery by shining a precise pattern of ultraviolet light on the lens. Everyone heals differently after surgery, so many people have vision that is good but not quite perfect with non-adjustable lenses. The Light Adjustable Lens can be adjusted to correct any remaining nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. The result is extraordinarily clear 20/20 vision in the great majority of patients. There is no need to undergo an additional surgical procedure like LASIK for perfect vision. The light adjustable lens does require a greater commitment from you. Because ultraviolet light changes the lens power, you need to wear UV protective glasses for the first month after surgery. It also requires three to four extra visits to our office to adjust the lens power.

Advanced Multifocal Lens

The multifocal lens is similar to bifocal or trifocal glasses, and can provide a very wide range of vision. You will generally have the ability to see far away and read without glasses. More than 90% of patients with these lens implants use glasses never or only occasionally. Multifocal lenses have some limitations. You will have mild halos around lights at night, although these are generally not bothersome. If you require perfect distance vision or vision for detailed close work, another implant may be a better choice for you. Multifocal lenses are best for motivated patients who have a strong enough desire to be spectacle-free to tolerate some mild halos at night.

Advanced Extended Range Lens

The extended range lens falls in between the single focus lens and the multifocal lens.  The extended range lens offers crisp distance vision day or night without the halos around lights one may have with the multifocal lens. It also offers excellent intermediate vision.  This lens allows you to work on the computer, see the dashboard, or read large print held at arm’s length. The extended range lens is best for patients who want excellent, crisp distance vision and the ability to work on the computer without glasses, but are ok with reading glasses for up close.

Advanced Toric Lens

The toric lens implant is designed to correct larger amounts of astigmatism. The other lenses do not provide good vision in patients with high astigmatism. The toric lens offers excellent distance or close vision (but not both) in patients with high astigmatism.

Small Aperture Lens

With advanced technology, the Small Aperture Lens offers clear, precise vision at all distances. The lens eliminates unfocused light that causes blurred vision and transmits only the focused light to the retina, resulting in sharp and clear objects and text at varying distances.
